Twitter is Valuable
I was an immediate pessimist when I first heard about this new cross between SMS and blogging, called Twitter. I thought “how many groups are there that need this invasive level of updates/presence?” However Twitter can mean so much more. The BBC and CNN are using it to get news out quick. IT departments are using to broadcast system updates.According to Wikipedia: Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send "updates" (text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) via SMS, instant messaging, email, the Twitter website, or an application such as Twitterrific. Twitter was founded in March 2006.Do we really need this? But having just read that today’s children view email as a method to communicate with their older generation, it made me think seriously how wrong I may be.My wife’s Sylvan Learning Center could use it announce schedule changes to its students rather than the very unreliable phone system. At my last company, SAXOTECH, we were pushing just this type of interaction between our client newspapers and their readers. While I see the value Twitter can provide I am left with but one concern. It is yet another place for me to upload my contacts and recreate again my “Buddy List”. But that’s another article when we talk about profile aggregators. If you have thoughts on Twitter and Twitterfication, let your voice be heard
